Short description

A custom-written and illustrated heirloom volume preserving a grandparent’s voice, lived experiences, and personal perspective — shaped into a lasting record for children, grandchildren, and future generations.

Full description

A grandparent often carries the longest memory in a family — a memory shaped by different eras, different conditions, different expectations of life.

Much of this memory is shared informally: across kitchen tables, in repeated anecdotes, in stories half-told and rarely written down.

The Grandparent’s Record is a bespoke heirloom book created to preserve that voice in structured, lasting form.

The book is shaped not merely as a chronological biography, but as a composed narrative built from:

  • Early childhood and formative years
  • Family origins and ancestry
  • Education, work, and migration
  • Marriage and parenthood
  • Historical events experienced firsthand
  • Personal beliefs, habits, humor, and ways of thinking
  • Reflections on change across generations

Rather than attempting total completeness, the focus is clarity and coherence, identifying the experiences that shaped character, the values that endured, and the lessons consciously or unconsciously carried forward.

The result is a volume that allows future generations not only to know what happened, but to understand how it was experienced.

It becomes a point of return. a way for grandchildren to encounter their grandparent’s voice long after conversation is no longer possible.

Process overview

The process begins with a structured intake form to establish:

  • The grandparent’s basic life timeline
  • Cultural or geographic context
  • Family structure across generations
  • Key periods that require attention
  • Existing materials (photographs, letters, documents)

We then hold a series of private listening sessions. These conversations are gently guided but structured, typically moving through:

  • Early life and family of origin
  • Young adulthood and formative decisions
  • Partnership, work, and parenthood
  • Later life reflections

Sessions are recorded and transcribed for accuracy.

From this material, the atelier develops:

  • A clear narrative structure
  • Thematic sections
  • A consistent narrative voice reflecting the speaker’s tone and cadence

Illustration and archival integration are developed in parallel. Archival photographs are placed intentionally, not decoratively, supporting memory rather than interrupting it.

Draft chapters are returned for review. We refine sequencing, factual details, and tonal accuracy to ensure the book reflects the speaker faithfully and without embellishment.

The finished volume is composed, typeset, printed, and bound as a long-term family record.

Each Grandparent’s Record Is:

  • Fully custom-written from primary conversations
  • Structured chronologically with thematic clarity
  • Faithful to the grandparent’s speech patterns and tone
  • Contextualized within historical and cultural settings where relevant
  • Illustrated with restrained art direction
  • Integrated with archival photographs where appropriate
