Short description

A custom-written and illustrated narrative volume documenting the relationship between siblings – tracing shared childhood, divergence, loyalty, conflict, and the enduring bond that forms across time.

Full description

Sibling relationships are rarely simple. They begin before memory fully forms. They unfold in shared rooms, divided spaces, whispered alliances, rivalries, protection, comparison, distance, and return.

The Sibling Story is a custom-created narrative volume that documents the relationship between two or more siblings across time. It does not idealize the bond, nor reduce it to sentiment. Instead, it traces how it developed, how it changed, and what endured.

These books may explore:

  • The arrival of a first or subsequent child
  • Early childhood dynamics and shared environments
  • Rivalries and alliances
  • Differences in temperament and identity
  • Moments of fracture or distance
  • Protective gestures and loyalty
  • Shared family contexts shaping both lives
  • Adulthood redefinitions of the bond
  • The language siblings use with one another

The narrative is not written from a single perspective alone. Where possible, multiple voices are gathered and placed in dialogue, allowing the structure to reflect complexity rather than simplification.

The result is a composed record of a relationship that shaped both people, often more deeply than either realized at the time.

Process overview

The process begins with a structured intake outlining:

  • The number of siblings involved
  • Key stages in the relationship
  • Shared environments (homes, schools, cities)
  • Major turning points
  • Periods of closeness or distance
  • The intended purpose of the book (private archive, milestone gift, reconciliation, etc.)

We then hold separate or joint listening sessions with parents and each sibling when possible. These conversations explore:

  • Early memory
  • Perception of the other
  • Points of tension or growth
  • Moments of protection, rivalry, or shared risk
  • How the relationship shifted into adulthood

From this material, the atelier:

  • Identifies recurring themes and contrasts
  • Establishes a chronological framework
  • Structures chapters around developmental stages
  • Integrates multiple perspectives without collapsing them into one voice
  • Develops restrained visual language that reflects both individuality and connection

Drafts are reviewed for accuracy, tonal balance, and representation of each voice. Revisions focus on structure and emphasis.

The finished volume holds the relationship as it was lived – layered, imperfect, formative.

Each Sibling Story is:

  • Fully custom-written from primary listening sessions
  • Structured across developmental stages (childhood → adolescence → adulthood)
  • Composed to hold multiple perspectives where applicable
  • Balanced between memory and reflection
  • Illustrated with restrained art direction that supports tone without overwhelming it
  • Designed to integrate archival photographs with editorial clarity and narrative placement
