Atelier Agolée
The Goodbye Book
The Goodbye Book
Short description
A custom-written and illustrated book created in life’s final chapter, composed to preserve one person’s words, memories, and presence for those who will remain.
Full description
The Goodbye Book is a custom-created heirloom book shaped in the presence of life’s closing chapter. It is created for individuals who wish to leave behind words, reflections, memories, or a sense of presence for those who will continue on.
These books are not statements of closure, nor attempts to resolve loss. They are acts of care, ways of placing language where voice may no longer be available. The content may include:
- Personal reflections on a life lived
- Stories that shaped identity
- Acknowledgements of specific people
- Clarifications or reconciliations
- Practical thoughts alongside emotional ones
- Ordinary observations that feel important to record
- Messages addressed to children, partners, siblings, or friends
- Words intended to be opened at particular moments
The tone is shaped entirely by the individual and their circumstances. Some books are gentle and reflective. Others are practical, direct, or sparse. There is no prescribed emotional register. What matters is accuracy, that the words feel true to the person who is leaving them.
Process overview
The process begins with a structured intake document designed to gather practical context: health situation, timeline considerations, family structure, and the individual’s intentions for the book.
We then schedule several private listening conversatios. These are structured conversations — recorded with permission — focused on capturing voice, phrasing, memory details, and specific relational contexts.
Sessions may take place:
- Directly with the individual
- With a close family member present
Each conversation has a clear purpose: one may focus on life chronology, another on specific relationships, another on direct address.
From these recordings and notes, the atelier composes a structured manuscript. This includes:
- Narrative sequencing
- Clarified chronology
- Edited but faithful voice
- Removal of repetition while preserving authenticity
Illustration develops in parallel and may incorporate archival photographs, handwriting samples, or visual references meaningful to the individual.
A draft manuscript is returned for careful review. Revisions focus on:
- Accuracy of memory
- Tone alignment
- Clarity of address
- Removal of unintended ambiguity
When complete, the book is prepared as a premium printed volume designed for long-term keeping.
These books are not meant to be read in a single sitting. They are meant to be encountered over time.
