The One Who Holds Us
You have spent your whole life inside the shape they made. This book asks where that shape came from.

Every family organizes itself around a central presence — a mother or father whose temperament, choices, and silences set the internal climate. The patterns of authority, expression, and resilience do not arrive from nowhere; this book locates their source.

It traces their path from the absolute beginning — early formation, family origins, the historical and social conditions they navigated, migration or displacement, work, partnership, parenthood, and the particular pressures of the era they lived through. It seeks understanding rather than admiration alone. It asks not only who this person was, but what made them that way, and what they ultimately passed forward — both intentionally and not.

On Portraying a Parent Honestly

Understanding where a parent's patterns came from often means sitting with the parts of them that were difficult, not only the parts worth admiring. A client may arrive with real love for this person alongside real complexity in how that person shaped them — and want a portrait that holds both, rather than a tribute that flattens one into the other.

You decide where that balance sits. This is neither a sanitized biography nor an airing of grievances; it is your understanding, given form, at whatever degree of candor feels true to you. Where the subject is living and may read the volume, we discuss that context directly with you before writing begins, so the finished book reflects a choice you made deliberately, not one made for you.

Where the relationship allows for it, the subject themselves can also take part — sitting for their own listening sessions alongside yours. This isn't required, but when it's welcome, hearing directly from the person the book is about often deepens the portrait considerably: their own account of a choice you only ever saw from the outside, placed in direct conversation with your understanding of it.
